March from the Metro Center to the Sentinel

On October 12, 2005, a March and Rally to End the Bus Strike by Supporting Workers was organized by the Student and Worker Coalition for Justice (SWCJ) at UC Santa Cruz. The demonstration began with a rally at the base of UCSC followed by a march to the Metro Center in downtown Santa Cruz. After a rally at the Metro Center, demonstrators took their message directly to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The Sentinel is living up to their reputation by providing terrible, pro-establishment, coverage of the metro strike. It could not be anymore clear that a large section of Santa Cruz, especially students and workers at UCSC, are in solidarity with striking bus drivers.

Rally at the Metro Center to Support Bus Drivers

On October 12, 2005, a March and Rally to End the Bus Strike by Supporting Workers was organized by the Student and Worker Coalition for Justice (SWCJ) at UC Santa Cruz. The demonstration began with a rally at the base of UCSC followed by a march to the Metro Center in downtown Santa Cruz. Bus drivers who were rallying at the Metro Center were very happy to see such a large group of people marching in solidarity with bus drivers.

Union and Student Solidarity at the Santa Cruz Metro Center

On the evening of October 6, 2005, a solidarity rally for striking bus drivers was held at the downtown Metro Center. Members of a whole range of unions spoke about their support for the bus drivers. Tim Fitzmaurice, a member of the city council, expressed support for the bus drivers. Javier from the Student and Worker Coalition for Justice (SWCJ) at UCSC spoke about support from the students. Emily Riley was the only member of the Transit Board at the rally.

Striking Bus Drivers, College Republicans and Student Solidarity

October 6, 2005 – The Bus Drivers are on Strike. The College Republicans at UC Santa Cruz organized a rally at the Metro Center to tell the Bus Drivers to get back to work. Therefore, the Student and Worker Coalition for Justice, MEChA and others held a rally countering the College Republicans and in Solidarity with the Bus Drivers.
