Participants arrived ready to work, but also motivated to haul home tubs of apples and jugs of juice for drinking or fermenting into hard cider.

Ron, a Westside homeowner, said that this year’s crop of oranges was the most tasty and abundant in the tree’s lifetime.

On this sunny afternoon, the group converged at Frederick Street Park and then split up from there to pick lemons and oranges.

The Santa Cruz Fruit Tree Project is run entirely by volunteers who help to scout and map trees, and organize harvests and workshops.
