Charges Not Filed Against Wicahpiluta (Luta) Candelaria

Supporters from the Bay Area and Santa Cruz celebrate while standing in solidarity with Ohlone activist Wicahpiluta (Luta) Candelaria at the Hayward Hall of 'Justice' on June 23, 2014.

Luta had been charged with "obstruction of justice," however the DA decided to not press charges.

On June 20, Luta was walking home in San Leandro, CA when he was approached by police officers asking where he was headed. Luta was subsequently ambushed from behind by seven police officers and badly beaten.

Luta had been held in Santa Rita Jail since June 20. Hopefully he has been released by now (June 23).

Update: He was released from Santa Rita on the morning of June 24.

On June 24 and 25, Wicahpiluta thanked his supporters and shared photos of his swollen face.

I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all your love & continued support thru what is one of the most difficult times in my life.
