Bicycle Culture in Santa Cruz County
Photos by Bradley Allen
For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
~ Rudyard Kipling, The Second Jungle Book
Bicycles are forms of personal expression and identity, inexpensive transportation, as well as political statements. I enjoy taking photos while roaming the streets on my bicycle in a large pack. My photographs, taken in Santa Cruz and Watsonville, blend art, journalism, advocacy, and environmentalism.
At UC Santa Cruz, I received an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies, co-founded the Student Environmental Center, and earned a Masters in Social Documentation with an emphasis on photography and website development.
I helped create the Santa Cruz Independent Media Center, which is part of a global network of Indymedia collectives providing an internet platform for anyone to directly publish news and analysis. Today I'm an active volunteer with the Indybay.org collective of Northern California, which includes Santa Cruz IMC.
On BradleyAllen.net I share my photography and writing about social justice, community, and the environment. My photos have been used by organizations and social movements in the U.S. and beyond.
