On October 7, 2005, a March and Rally to End the Bus Strike by Supporting Workers was organized by the Student and Worker Coalition for Justice (SWCJ) at UC Santa Cruz. The demonstration began with a rally at the base of UCSC followed by a march to the Metro Center in downtown Santa Cruz.
Members of a whole range of unions spoke about their support for the bus drivers.
Student and Worker Coalition for Justice, MEChA and others held a rally in solidarity with bus drivers.
Malik Rahim, a longtime community activist in New Orleans and SF, spoke in SF about the situation in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
A rally was held at UCSC to raise awareness about the sweatshop-made uniforms purchased for dinning hall workers and the sweatshop-made UCSC apparel.
On October 3, 2005, a community support rally for Head Start workers was held in front of the Santa Cruz County Community Counseling Center (SCCCC). The rally was followed by a board of trustees meeting where the workers asked the board to approve a fair contract.
We marched a few blocks to the KFC on Mission St. to call attention to KFC’s cruelty to animals.
The event was a way for Shreveport, Bogalousa and New Orleans, Louisiana to say “Thank You” to Santa Cruz community members.
A community yard sale benefiting survivors of Hurricane Katrina took place at the United Methodist Church in Santa Cruz.
