Aptos Post Office Jumps and Bicycle Valet at Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival

On Saturday, April 13, 2013, I volunteered as a bicycle valet for People Power at the 4th Annual Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival in Aptos Village, California.

Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBoSC) and FOX, presenters of the festival, describe it as "a celebration of the world class mountain bike facilities, riders, and industry of Santa Cruz County, and it continues to grow year after year with the generous support of its sponsors, volunteers, and community. The event’s success testifies to the depth of the mountain bike culture in Santa Cruz County."

My time at the event was short, however I took the following photos of youth riding at the world renowned Aptos Post Office Jumps, site of the Pro Jump Jam, as well as the valet bicycle parking provided by People Power of Santa Cruz County.

The mission of People Power is to improve the quality of life in Santa Cruz County by promoting bicycling and other forms of sustainable transportation. People Power’s secure valet bike parking is a professional service that promotes healthy and sustainable transportation to and from a wide variety of community events.

In the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Jason Hoppin and Christina Gullickson report, "Developer Barry Swenson Builder plans to level the site, located across the street from the Aptos post office, to make way for the long-delayed Aptos Village neighborhood development. The plans to put new streets, stores and homes on a weed-choked stretch of prime real estate was approved by the county last year."

In response, Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival writes, "Keeping with our trademark spirit of positivity, though, the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival believes that as one door closes, another WILL open. As our Festival Director Mark Davidson asserts, we're looking for a new place where these riders can continue to explore their creativity!"
