Peace and Unity March 2012 in Watsonville

Over 350 people marched in the annual Peace and Unity March on the unusually hot Sunday afternoon of September 30, 2012 in downtown Watsonville, CA. This year's march was held to protest gang and domestic violence in the community of Watsonville, and was organized by the Watsonville Peace & Unity Coalition, which was initiated by the Watsonville Brown Berets. The turnout was significantly larger than previous years, due to recent violence, a larger coalition including the City of Watsonville, and well-organized outreach throughout Watsonville.

"The Peace and Unity March has been an annual event since 1994 when the families of victims and our local community came together to organize an event to speak out against violence in the streets in South Santa Cruz County. With the increase of violence that has happened in Santa Cruz County in the last few years, it is critical to help promote and sustain events like ours. It is all our responsibility to make our community a safer place. This year's march will begin on Sunday, September 30 at 12:30 p.m in Watsonville City Plaza.

"Today, the march is still organized by local youth, local community groups and the growing number of families who have lost loved ones to violence. We are also working with the City of Watsonville to make the march a permanent event, co-sponsored by the City Council." — Watsonville Brown Berets
